Stories, Traditions, Customs and Fierce Women of Ireland
Session 1: The Fierce Women of Ireland: Warriors, Queens and Rebels
Join Gráinne McConnell on the Cultural Stage for an inspiring exploration of the formidable women who forged Irish culture, history, and identity. From the legendary 16th-century pirate queen Gráinne Mhaol to former President Mary McAleese—whose visionary leadership and dedication helped pave the way for peace in the North of Ireland—this session highlights the bold leaders, fierce rebels, and trailblazing women who shaped the nation across centuries.
Session 2: The Stories, Traditions and Customs of the Irish Year
Step into the rhythmic customs of the Celtic calendar with cultural presenter Gráinne McConnell. Delve into the rich folklore and time-honored rituals that have marked the Irish year across generations, from the ancient roots of carving turnips at Samhain and the sisterhood celebrations of Nollaig na mBan, to the sacred tradition of weaving St. Brigid’s crosses at Imbolc. Discover the seasonal folklore and living traditions that continue to bridge Ireland’s ancient heritage with contemporary culture.
Irish Foods Showcase
Join content creator Jessie Higgins on the Cultural Stage for an authentic Irish Food Showcase celebrating family, tradition, and community. After spending four years living in Belfast immersed in family traditions and inherited recipes, Jessie recently relocated to Indiana, finding an immediate home and warm welcome within the local Irish community.
Now embracing her new Hoosier life while sharing her journey online, Jessie takes the stage to demonstrate cherished culinary traditions passed down through generations. Watch as she prepares Irish staples like traditional soda bread and sweet fifteens, shares the rich stories behind each bake, and offers free wee samples for attendees to enjoy.
Giants, Legends & the Giant’s Causeway: The Bigger Side of Irish Folklore
Join Belfast native Paddy Higgins on the Cultural Stage for an engaging journey into the rich, legendary world of Irish folklore. Having recently moved to Indianapolis with his wife, Jessie, and their Chihuahua, Benito, Paddy brings with him the cherished tales told to him by his Granny, paired with his unique perspective on life in Ireland versus the US.
Far beyond standard tales of fairies and pots of gold, Paddy explores Ireland’s deep love for larger-than-life legends—specifically the iconic Irish giants. Delve into the wild rivalries, questionable decision-making, and epic tales behind figures like Finn McCool and the creation of the Giant’s Causeway, all delivered with authentic wit and a healthy dose of classic Irish storytelling.
